Jacob Zerka
Hello! My name is Jacob Zerka and I will be working with Dr. Rashid as an associate dentist beginning in July. I was born and raised just outside of Flint, Michigan in a small city called Swartz Creek. I attended Swartz Creek High School and Graduated in 2016. After high school I followed in my father's footsteps and attended Michigan State University where I studied Neuroscience and Psychology. After graduation in 2020, I moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan to pursue my dream of becoming a dentist. I will graduate from the University of Michigan with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery in May, but don't worry, I will always bleed green and white. In my free time I love to go to MSU basketball and football games,, play golf and volleyball, and cook big Lebanese dinners with my family.
Why I Chose Dentistry
I first found my interest in dentistry at a very young age. In kindergarten for career day I dressed up as a dentist and handed out toothpaste and toothbrushes to my classmates. Why, I'm not completely sure, but I loved going to the dentist. As I grew older, dentistry remained at the top of the list with some thoughts of maybe being a professional baseball player or following my dad's footsteps and becoming a lawyer. My passion started in college when I had personality psychology class. We spent the class period discussing emotion and how across nearly all cultures, happiness is shared with a smile. No one should ever be afraid to show happiness, in fact, this would be my driving philosophy for pursuing dentistry. Dentistry would give me the toolset and the privilege to help others share their happiness, with a healthy and beautiful smile. As my first mentor told me, dentistry is a blend of medicine, engineering, teaching, and art. These pillars of dentistry are the foundation for my passion that I am excited to share with you.
How Did I End Up Here
While I was at Michigan State I volunteered at the MDAs Mission of Mercy. At this event, dentists, assistants, and hygienists from all over the state volunteer their weekend to provide free care to thousands of people. It was at this event where I met Dr. Rashid making crowns with new technology that I became fascinated by. Dr. Rashid saw my name tag and immediately recognized the last name. We began talking about ourselves and come to find out his practice was right next to Michigan State. That next semester I reached out to him and came to shadow. The first thing he did was hand me a stack of 100 papers, which was a family tree, detailing that we were actually related. I was very fortunate to find Dr. Rashid, as I spent every Monday for the next two years in his office to shadow his craft. During dental school I would stop by on breaks where I would learn more detailed tricks of the trade. That brings us to today, where I am happy to help better serve the Lansing community alongside an amazing mentor to bring better access to efficient and high quality dental care.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about me, and I am very excited to meet you in the near future. Together with Dr. Rashid and the rest of his amazing dental team, we will strive to give you that healthy smile so you can share your happiness with the world.
